Today is Memorial Day, US federal holiday. It is the day of recognition of people who sometimes visit cemeteries to honor their deceased relatives while also remembering all U.S. Service Members who died while in military service. So everybody get one day off on Monday. Other thing....

We had fun on Sunday. I accompanied Robert running miles with a bicycle in the evening. This time we headed to one of the horse field place. Actually it was about a midget horse that we've been seeing every time we drove by the area, but we never stop to get close to see it. So we took this opportunity to go there. It was really hot that day so he took his t-shirt off while he was running.
I haven't noticed how many horses were before and I just saw the midget one when we passed by the place, now I can see few of them.
They didn't come straight away when I reached the fence. But one horse out of nowhere coming towards me and looked like he want to communicate with me. He seems so friendly. I touched his head, he tried to sniff me and here he was...

Then the others came closer when Robert fed him the grass..See the midget horse.
Now the midget one start getting closer to us
Finally, he wanted to be fed too...
One shot for me

After few minutes with them, we headed back to our house which another a mile to go. It was 7 pm but the sun rays still hitting us.

Have a good week!!

Gas....I think I got used to call that term now. In the US, gas is short for “gasoline” which is American term and “petrol” is the British term for gas. I have been taught or been saying petrol before and I felt awkward when I have to say gas in American way. But that is not the issue. The price is the main issue.

Most gas stations have different price of gas. Anyway who set the price of gas? Certainly everybody who drives everyday is aware and concern about the price of a gallon of gas. I would rather fill up the gas where they offer 1 cent cheaper than the other station. Is it taking much different when the price is 1 cent or 2 cents cheaper? You do the math.

Personally I didn't understand the whole pricing thing. Is oil companies or US government who handle the issue of worldwide market? The price of gas was around $3.34/gal in January this year and it’s continuously going up to 35 cents until now.

Why the oil companies or whoever responsible for the prices don’t aware that people are struggling to live and paying for the gas to go to work or travelling?

Yesterday the gas price was $3.69/gal in Kangaroo station. It really pissed me off when I saw it went up to $3.72/gal this afternoon. There is no surprise if the price goes up to $4/gal sooner or later. Should we do something about it?

Have a good weekend!

Dunkin' has opened a new branch in my living area and today it's grand opening event. This is gonna add another franchise fast food which I found there are more than 10 fast food restaurant (McD, BK, Hardees, Wendy's, Taco Bell...etc) around my place. There were crowded with people when I went there. I guess they just finished the opening celebration or they go nuts with donuts. Yeah, let's join the crowd!! Maybe everything is new, the building, the floor, the decoration and everybody got excited. Truthfully I am also fan of donut but I just eat it occasionally. It is at Bluff Rd...!
Here it is....................
I have to park at the roadside since the parking were fully occupied when I reached the place and walked up there.
I bought a dozen of assorted donuts and a small cup of ice hazelnut coffee. A dozen?? Don't worry, I am not the only one who eat it. My favourite is Bavarian Kreme Donut( not on the plate one).

Treat for myself and everybody at home.

I made a pie from wild blackberries that I picked on the other day. There are many recipes for berry pies on the internet you can refer. I chose simple recipe and it turned out great!. This recipe also can use for any fresh berry.

Method:

Preheat oven 350 degree F

Crust:
1 unbaked 9" pie crust or double pie crust( 1 for top and 1 for bottom)
You can find double pie crust at the store. I used Pillsburry pie crust.

Or if you prefer to make crust, you can refer this site
Most of the recipes use 4 cups blackberries, but I just used 2 cups.
Filling:
2 cups fresh blackberries
2 Tbsp flour
1/2 cup sugar
1 Tbsp butter

*Combine fresh blackberries, flour and sugar in the bowl. Mix them well without crushing the blackberries.
*Pour them into the pie shell and dot them with butter.
*Cover with top crust. Cut the slits into top of pastry for ventilation.
*Option: I cut long strips of the top crust to make lattice work across top of pie.
*Press the edge of pie with fork.

*Bake it for 40 minutes or until crust is golden brown.
*Serve with cool whip or vanilla icecream.
Both of us love it and I would make it again!!

How was your weekend? Lately Robert getting back on track to run miles so last Sunday evening I accompanied him running by riding a bicycle. We used to do it at the beach or at the nearby park. Riding bike while watching him running beside me was fun and at the same time helped him by pacing him to run in the long distance. He ran 2.5 miles (4 km) and finished about 16 minutes then we rode a bike together. I sat on the top of the handle bicycle and he controlled the handle and the pedals. The pictures were blurry and shaky because I was on the bike!

 It was fun road ride.

Have a good week!

Picking your own berries in your own yard is fun and exciting. I love berries so much and love to eat them. There are berry bushes growing wildly in our backyard and along the fence of the field. I haven’t noticed it until Babe stopped there while I was walking with him and he ate them one by one crazily. My dog eating berries? Was it safe to eat? I picked a few of them up and I didn’t eat it straight away. Obviously I never see wild berries before and I was pretty cautious about wild fruit. I think it should be ok if the dog eats it so I waited. I got to see his condition after 24 hours. It made me relieved that he was surely fine on the next day.
Seeing them in red and black colour had me curious thought and confused whether they were raspberries or blackberries. I was kind of ignorant about the "wild" berries so I looked over the internet to find out about them. They are blackberries, some say black raspberries since they are smaller than the locally grown one. After few days most of the berries in the bushes turned into dark purple and shiny deep black. Those showing the wild blackberries ripened enough to harvest.

I decided to pick them up in the late afternoon. The bushes are thorny and widespread all over the place so I have to wear gloves and boots to avoid that thorn prick on my skin.
I just picked half of the bucket. Those blackberries absolutely smell fresh and nice  in the bucket.
A handful of wild blackberries.
The blackberries smell made me remember how adore I was with Black Raspberry Vanilla body lotion from Bath&BodyWork that I bought a year ago.

Most of the blackberries are still growing and will be ready in few days. So I leave them for another fun day to pick. They really looked delicious in the picture below.

I stored the fresh-picked blackberries in the container and put them in the fridge so that they will stay fresh. It taste really sweet and I already have plan with them. So see next time in other post.

Have a good weekend!:)

My favourite nail polish color of this month is lavender color. I don't have time to spend at manicure salon, I painted on my own at home. I am not a pro painter, but this nail polish got my nails looked professional
The color is excellent and really suits with my skin. Personally I fell in love with it.

More pictures...
Why the 3rd and 4th picture looked different??It was hard to say in the picture because of my camera, it changed the color tone automatically when the flash was on. But the actual color was the first picture on top.

Have a good week ahead!

Strawberry season just started a month ago (April). It is one of the first spring's fruit to ripen. Definitely strawberry can be found at the store all year round but the price in it's season is cheaper than usual. There is one strawberry farm near to our house. I can reach to the farm around 10-12 minutes with a bicycle and pick on my own berries. It was pleasure to pick your favourite one but I was so damn lazy to hop on the bicycle and ride it there.

We just stopped by at the Walmart store when we were at the town and got 2 lb of strawberries. Those berries were huge and really sweet.
Some of the berries almost reach the size of an apple.
Since the strawberries have been in our refrigerator for a week, I enjoyed them like those below

Fresh morning with honey bunch cereal breakfast
Maybe some Strawberry Shortcake
Or
Eating them raw with splash of cool whip cream
How about chocolate covered strawberry? Yummy...

Or indulgence myself with this dessert

Oh don't forget to make strawberry smoothies...

Have a great weekend!!

Tarte aux Pommes or classic French Apple tart is perhap the best loved dessert in France. I decided to make it from the moment I watched Barefoot Contessa in Food Network channel a few weeks ago.
Definitely it was so simple to prepare. It is different than American pie or tart which is no crust on top. The recipe suggested to use Granny Smith Apple but I substituted it with red apple. I may to try using Granny Smith next time. You can refer this recipe for actual recipe. I modified it for 2 servings and reduce sugar. It turned out great, flaky and tasted great. I love it.

Preheat oven at 350 degree F or higher 375 degree F

Pastry :
1 cup of flour
4 Tbsp of cold butter
1/3 cup or less of cold water
1/2 tsp of salt
1 Tbs of sugar

Filling:
1 or 2 apples
2 Tbsp butter
3 Tbsp sugar.

Bake it for 40 minutes. Bon apetite!

It happened few years ago, 2007. I never forgot about this every year in May. This race experience really inspiring me to run. I might started thinking about running again. Not jogging. Maybe not this year. I still couldn't believe that I was one of hundreds participant of the beach run series years ago.

There were 8 sets of  run series in every Thursday. I remembered that I just took 4 out of 8 races. There were 3 types of race, 1 mile (1.6km), 5km and 10km. I would consider myself as a beginner runner. So I learned to run 1 mile as a beginning for a long distant runner. I never ran 5k or 10k but I would love to try.

My running race began when hubby invited me to join race with him. He loves running and winning titled was not his target even he won many awards of  races. Running is part of his enjoyment and also challenge him to achieve a good result than other people. He participated a lot and lots of long distance race. This picture below showed him running one of races. It was taken by a professional photographer and published it on the website.

My FIRST time race was in Beaufort, NC. I registered 1 mile (1.6 km) race. 1 mile doesn't seem so far but it worth to try as a beginner runner before trying long distance miles. The race was held on the road. The picture below was taken in Beaufort, NC. I had no idea how I was gonna perform my race that time. Was it like?
The race started at 9:00 am for 1 mile then 9:15 am for 5k and 10k. I finished the race but I felt pretty bad because I didn't do good. I felt weak that time. No stamina. His race started at 9:15 am so I didn't get chance to see him running at the start line. He finished at 45:04 minutes for 10k.

It was raining just after 1 mile race ended. The road seems wet and slippery. So 5k and 10k runners running in the rain. We went home after they announced the winner.
End of Beaufort race

       ******************************************************
I learned my lesson when I got left behind in the race in Beaufort. It motivated me to get serious on physical training. I put much effort on my training such as lifting weight, abs workout, running on the paved track and cardio workout with Nordic Track Skier. Some of my training was coached by him. I think that time was crazy because my training was like an athlete.

I joined the beach race for 2nd time race. Running along the beach? Cool huh!!. The race started in the afternoon at 5:30 pm for 1 mile. Personally I had nervous feeling when I was standing in the crowd with the participants. The participants were variety of ages from 12 years old to 60 years old. I had a thought"I just have to run as fast as I could". When I heard the gun shot to the air, I ran with slow paced. I planned to steady run in the first half and run fast in the second half.
Running at the beach was fun and exciting but it was kinda hard when I ran against the wind. It was so windy at the beach. The wind blowing towards me putting extra weight on my body and resisted me to run fast. I hoped that I didn't get left behind. I must go fast. My heart beating faster, my legs started getting heavy due to lactic acid build up in my muscles, my mind started thinking to stop and walk in the middle of the race. I see some participants walking after halfway running.

I remembered him saying this "Once you stop, you lose". Thinking about stop really challenged me mentally. After half mile running, I saw the finish line about 800 meters away and the crowd. It made me to sprint and running hard. I passed a few runners in front of me. I heard people clapping along the way. I really had short breathe. When I stepped on the finish line, the crowd saying "Good job" and smile at me.
The organizer took my number to record my time.  I felt want to vomit at the finish line because I pushed myself really hard in the race. I exhaled and inhaled fast due to lack of oxygen and hubby welcome me with a hug and smile. I said " I succeed to run all the way" He said " You did good" He got me some water. I walked along the beach to recover myself and felt great after that.

His 10k race started at 6:00 pm. When I saw the crowd, I wish I could run 10k but it need a lot of training. They were ready to go and waiting to hear the gun shot.
It took about 35-40 minutes to see 10k runners back to the finish line. I sat on the beach while waiting for him. Finally I saw him running like a wind and I managed to snap one picture of him.

We had great achievement during this beach run series. The organizer didn't announce the winner at the end of the race. They published the race event  and the results in the newspaper "Carteret News Times". The event was held in every week so we had to get weekend newspaper to see our result.

The first set of beach race, the result was really unexpected, both of us got the first place! Oh my god, I felt so happy. It worth to kick hard that time.
My time was 9 minutes 16 seconds for a mile and his was 46 minutes 16 seconds for 10k.
We didn't took part for 2nd set, but we participated on the Third set of races. I dropped to the 5th place with the record time 9 minutes 28 seconds. I don't remember this time why I ran so slow.

Then Fourth set of race, I gained and set a new record 9:06 minutes compared to my first set of race. I cut 10 seconds and I got the 3rd place
Then this time, I didn't remember whether i joined or not.. The arrow showed him running with barefoot.
Eventhough I didn't maintain my place in the race, I think I did a good job during the races. He proud of me because I tried and push myself to the limit. I still consider running 9 minutes for a mile was pretty slow. Obviously I need to improve my mile time. My weight currently around 100 lbs (45 kg) so I would achieve to run at least 7 minutes or 8 minutes a mile. I need to practice run fast, workout a lot and motivation.

I wish we would start to join race again someday, one day when we are ready.

Relaxing in the tub with the sweet scent of flowers is one way of easing the stress of daily life. I had a little bit luxury spa last Sunday without the expense. No ride, no appointment, no money to spend. Just spent my time to prepare things. But it worth!

I made a homemade splendid rose petal bath. I ran warm bath water,  scattered the red rose petal and some wild honey suckle flower into the water. I do not have rose oil so I put few drops of some essential lavender oil. The essential oil is an option. You can put bath salt or milk or bubble bath if you have it.
Lavender oil has been known to help with exhaustion and rose is an astringent on the skin, leaving it soft and youthful. So lavender rose bath blend offer myself some benefits.
The white flower at the corner of the bath tub really vibrant the environment because it has fresh scent. I should put more roses but maybe next time. I felt good after bathing and feeling soft and fresh. I really experienced true luxury.

Where were Misses Roses came from? It came from the wild roses bushes in our flower bed. It's different kind than common rose. They have been growing wildly since last week.
We do not have to take care of it since it is wild plant. No water spray. No fussy at all. I love you, wild roses!
